course description
Science is a vast subject! It is both a body of knowledge and a process. Science is the application and connection of facts to the real world. It is a process of wondering and seeking answers - a way of discovering the way things work. The pursuit of answers and understandings through science is used to develop new technologies, treat diseases, and deal with many types of problems. Most of all, science is an exciting subject!
In fifth grade, we will explore several science topics through hands-on exploration and questioning our understandings of the way things are. I will work to build a positive attitude toward science and engineering. Through our own curiosity, we will seek answers, test what we learn, and apply what we learn to new situations. Our lessons will focus on what we know, what we've learned, and how we came to know it.
To support the teaching and learning of science content and practices, we will use the FOSS Science program. FOSS is a research-based science curriculum for grades K-8 developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley. FOSS is also an ongoing research project dedicated to improving the learning and teaching of science. The FOSS project began over 25 years ago during a time of growing concern that our nation was not providing young students with an adequate science education. The FOSS program materials are designed to meet the challenge of providing meaningful science education for all students in diverse American classrooms and to prepare them for life in the 21st century. To learn more about FOSS, check out their website here.
We will cover the following topics in grade five:
